Why do travel books never have footnotes or endnotes citing their sources?

Guidebooks and travel books (from Lonely Planet to Rick Steves) usually provide quite a bit of history in their first chapters. Their information on "Sites to See" usually also include history. Why don't they have a footnote or endnote section where they quote their sources for the information?
