Help! I'm a little confused about footnotes?

I get how I'm suppose to create footnotes. My question is what if I'm citing a few of the same references in one page, is it going to go in numerical order 1,2,3... or for that same reference throughout the same page will the number stay the same 1,1,1? I never had to do footnotes until now and I want to make sure its right.
