Cross Referencing Footnotes in Word?

My dissertation is due in a week and I have a very long document with numerous cross references in the footnotes - it implied that inserting the cross references through word would mean they would automatically change as it moves around the document - it hasn't done this! While the document recognises that the references have changed (if I click on one, it takes me to the right reference), the actual numbers are not updating. I really don't have time to do it manually, it's due a week from now, and it is so irritating. I have Word 2004 for Mac btw - does anyone know how to update the footnotes?
